Robert crouched several feet away.
“Hello, Charlie.”
The old Pit Bull slowly raised his head.
His ears moved toward Robert’s voice.
Robert extended his hand.
Charlie sniffed his fingers.
Then, with a small effort, he stood up.
He walked toward Robert and gently pressed his gray muzzle against the man’s palm.
Robert began scratching the side of his neck.
Charlie leaned closer.
Helen noticed that the dog’s tail was moving.
Not quickly.
Just a slow, steady wag.
She knelt beside her husband.
“He’s sweet, isn’t he?”
Robert continued stroking Charlie.
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then he looked at Helen.
“Daisy would have liked him.”
One last Christmas at the shelter
The couple spent nearly an hour speaking with the shelter staff.
They learned about Charlie’s medical history, his arthritis medication, his diet, and the adjustments he would need in a new home.
Melissa explained that he would benefit from soft bedding, non-slip flooring, gentle exercise, and regular veterinary monitoring.
Robert and Helen listened carefully.
They had spent years caring for Daisy through her own senior health problems.
They understood the responsibilities involved.
Before making a decision, they took Charlie for a short walk in the shelter’s enclosed yard.
Snow covered the edges of the path.
Charlie moved slowly beside them.
Occasionally, he stopped to sniff the ground.
When Helen paused near a bench, Charlie leaned against her leg.
She rested her hand on his back.
Robert looked at his wife.
They did not need to discuss it for long.
They returned inside and asked to begin the adoption process.
Because their application, veterinary references, and home arrangements met the shelter’s requirements, staff were able to complete the adoption that afternoon.
Melissa brought Charlie’s belongings to the front desk.
His medication.
His familiar blanket.
A small bag of food.
And the faded Christmas-tree stuffed toy.
Helen took the toy and smiled.
“Of course that’s coming home too.”
As the shelter staff prepared Charlie’s leash, the old dog stood quietly beside Robert.
He did not seem to understand the excitement around him.
But when Robert gently called his name, Charlie turned toward the familiar voice.
Together, they walked through the shelter’s front door.
For the first time in three Christmases, Charlie was leaving with a family of his own.
The Christmas gift nobody expected
That evening, Robert and Helen welcomed Charlie into their warm living room.
A Christmas tree stood beside the window.
Soft lights glowed among the branches.
The fireplace was protected by a sturdy safety screen, and a thick orthopaedic dog bed had been placed several feet away from the heat.
Charlie entered cautiously.
He sniffed the carpet.
Explored the edge of the sofa.
And paused beside the unfamiliar bed.
