Near the back of the room, 29-year-old volunteer Emily Parker was organising cartons containing Christmas decorations.
As she lifted a lightweight box, she heard something strange.
A faint squeak.
Emily paused.
She listened.
The warehouse was filled with conversations, footsteps, and the rustling of packaging.
Then the sound came again.
A tiny, hoarse meow.
Emily looked around.
“Did somebody bring a cat in here?”
Another volunteer shook his head.
She listened again.
The sound appeared to be coming from a tall, uneven stack of cartons near the wall.
Emily stepped closer.
“Hello?”
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then came another weak cry.
This time, she was certain.
There was an animal somewhere inside the stack.
The volunteers immediately stopped moving the surrounding boxes.
Several cartons were leaning dangerously to one side, supported by smaller packages beneath them.
Trying to pull one out carelessly could cause the stack to collapse.
Two volunteers stabilised the upper containers while Emily and another worker carefully removed the boxes one at a time.
The meowing grew slightly clearer.
Then it stopped.
Emily froze.
“Wait. I can’t hear it anymore.”
She crouched beside the remaining cartons.
A box marked for Christmas decorations sat near the bottom.
Its sides were dented.
The shipping tape was still intact.
Emily gently tapped the cardboard.
“Hello, little one?”
A barely audible meow answered.
The smallest Christmas surprise
Emily carefully lifted the carton onto a clear table while another volunteer supported its damaged bottom.
She used a safety cutter to slice the packing tape along the top, keeping the blade shallow and away from the contents.
The cardboard flaps opened.
At first, she saw only old garlands, plastic Christmas ornaments, and crumpled tissue paper.
Then something moved beneath a folded red cloth.
Emily pulled the fabric aside.
A tiny gray-and-white kitten was lying curled in the corner.
Her fur was dirty and flattened.
Her ears were drooping.
Her little face rested against the cardboard, and her eyes were only half-open.
For a moment, Emily could not speak.
“Oh, sweetheart…”
Noel attempted to lift her head.
She managed only a few centimetres.
Then her chin dropped back onto the cloth.
Emily reached toward her with a soft towel.
The kitten gave one faint meow.
When Emily gently supported her body, Noel slowly pressed her nose against the gloved fingers.
She was trembling.
Her body felt weak, and her limbs offered little resistance as Emily carefully lifted her from the container.
The volunteers immediately contacted a veterinary clinic.
They placed Noel in a clean, ventilated carrier lined with warm towels and kept her in a quiet area while arranging urgent transport.
Emily stayed beside the carrier.
Every few minutes, she spoke softly.
“You’re okay, little girl. We’re getting you help.”
