Titan slowly sniffed.
Then he closed his eyes again.
Four years without space to move
Investigators later obtained statements suggesting Titan had been confined beneath the staircase for years.
He had once been purchased as a young Great Dane.
But as he grew larger, the household reportedly struggled to manage his size.
Rather than provide appropriate housing and exercise, his owners increasingly restricted him to the basement.
Eventually, he was kept inside the storage compartment.
There were no reliable veterinary records documenting regular care during that period.
The exact duration of confinement remained part of the investigation.
However, the physical consequences were unmistakable.
Titan’s limbs had become painfully stiff.
His hind legs were severely wasted.
Thickened pressure sores had developed around his elbows and hips from prolonged contact with hard surfaces.
The fur around his neck was worn away where his collar had rubbed repeatedly against the skin.
His nails were overgrown, and several were cracked.
The dog was profoundly underweight.
His back appeared unusually curved, although veterinarians would later determine that much of his abnormal posture was associated with weakness, stiffness, and chronic positioning rather than a permanently deformed spine.
But the most heartbreaking details were the smallest ones.
When a rescuer gently moved an empty bowl, Titan flinched.
When footsteps echoed from the stairs, he pulled his ears backwards.
And when the team briefly stepped away to prepare equipment, Titan attempted to raise his head toward the doorway.
He managed only a few inches.
Then his chin dropped against the dirty floor.
A quiet whimper escaped.
The room he could not leave
Before moving Titan, the rescue team asked an attending veterinarian to evaluate his condition.
Because of his extreme weakness and size, pulling him by his collar or attempting to make him walk could have caused further injury.
The veterinary team checked his breathing, circulation, hydration, and ability to respond.
They stabilised him as much as possible before arranging a safe extraction.
A large padded animal stretcher was brought into the basement.
The chain was removed.
For the first time in years, nothing physically connected Titan’s neck to the wall.
But he remained lying where he was.
One rescuer gently stroked his shoulder.
“All right, big guy. We’re going to get you out.”
Working in the cramped space, the team carefully positioned a transfer sheet beneath Titan and supported his head, spine, and limbs as they moved him onto the stretcher.
It took several people to carry him.
His body was enormous, even in its emaciated state.
As the rescuers lifted the stretcher, Titan’s long legs rested against the padding.
He remained quiet.
His eyes followed the movement of the doorway.
Then, slowly, he disappeared from the little room where he had spent so much of his life.
