BURLINGTON, VERMONT

A tiny stray kitten survived three days trapped inside a sealed cardboard box aboard a Christmas donation truck after crawling into the container to escape a winter storm.

The kitten, later named Noel, was discovered at a holiday donation sorting centre when a volunteer heard a faint meow coming from a towering pile of boxes.

By the time rescuers found her, Noel was severely dehydrated, shivering, and barely able to lift her head.

She had spent nearly seventy-two hours in darkness without access to food or water.

And the box containing her had been moved hundreds of miles without anyone knowing she was inside.

A freezing night nobody noticed

The ordeal began at a donation warehouse outside Albany, New York, during a December snowstorm.

Heavy snow covered the loading docks, and icy wind blew through the gaps beneath the metal doors.

Behind the building, a small gray-and-white kitten had been searching for somewhere warm.

Noel was estimated to be only eight weeks old.

Her little body was thin beneath her uneven fur, and her paws were wet from walking through melting snow.

She had been living near the warehouse for several days, surviving on scraps occasionally left behind by employees.

That evening, the temperature dropped sharply.

Noel tried sheltering beneath a parked delivery van, but the wind continued blowing snow beneath the vehicle.

She crept toward the warehouse loading area.

One door had been left partially open while workers prepared donations for shipment.

Inside, stacks of cardboard boxes filled the room.

Some contained winter clothing.

Others held toys, household supplies, and old Christmas decorations.

Noel wandered between the containers, sniffing the dusty concrete floor.

Eventually, she found a large cardboard box filled with crumpled packing paper, old fabric ribbons, plastic ornaments, and pieces of artificial Christmas garland.

The box was partly open.

She climbed inside.

The crumpled paper provided a little insulation from the cold floor.

Noel curled into a tight ball between a folded red cloth and a bundle of silver tinsel.

Her damp fur pressed against the soft fabric.

For the first time that evening, she stopped trembling long enough to fall asleep.

She did not know that the box was scheduled to leave the warehouse the following morning.

The box that disappeared

Before sunrise, workers began loading the donation truck.

The warehouse was busy.

Forklifts moved pallets toward the loading dock while employees taped cartons shut and checked shipment labels.

One worker noticed the partially open box of Christmas decorations.

Without looking beneath the packing material, he folded the flaps closed and secured them with shipping tape.

Inside, Noel woke to the sound of cardboard shifting above her.

She lifted her head.

The light disappeared.
