“No.”
The word was quiet.
Final.
He stopped.
Iris turned toward the audience.
“I apologise for the unexpected change in tonight’s program.”
A few guests shifted uneasily.
She looked toward the large screen behind the stage.
It had been prepared for a slideshow of photographs from the couple’s relationship.
Instead, it displayed a plain title.
WHITMORE MERIDIAN – GOVERNANCE AND OWNERSHIP UPDATE
The ballroom fell silent.
Adrian turned toward the screen.
His expression changed from embarrassment to something closer to fear.
Iris continued.
“Several members of our board, along with the relevant investors and advisers, have already received confidential information concerning an ongoing independent financial review.”
She spoke carefully.
She did not accuse Adrian of a crime that had not been established.
She did not display private hotel photographs or intimate messages to the guests.
She did not claim that the prenuptial agreement automatically transferred his property to her.
The screen showed only a redacted summary of the ownership proposal and the fact that the proposed share transfer had been paused pending review.
Then it displayed the signature page of the prenuptial agreement.
Adrian stared.
Iris looked toward him.
“You signed this three days ago.”
He swallowed.
“Iris—”
“You assured me you’d disclosed everything material to our marriage and our financial arrangements.”
He looked at the screen.
The wording was brief.
It referred to disclosure obligations, remedies subject to applicable law, and the need to resolve disputes through the agreed legal process.
Nothing about it created an instant transfer of forty per cent of the company.
It did, however, form part of the evidence that Adrian had made representations he could no longer plausibly defend.
Iris looked back at the audience.
“The board has also been reviewing certain transactions associated with our expansion subsidiary. Those matters will be addressed through proper corporate and legal channels.”
A murmur spread through the room.
At the VIP table, two directors looked toward each other.
One began reading something on his phone.
Adrian stepped forward again.
“You can’t do this.”
Iris looked at him.
“Which part?”
He stared.
She continued.
“Tell the truth?”
He lowered his voice.
“You’re destroying everything.”
For a moment, Iris felt a familiar ache.
The months she had spent loving him had not disappeared.
She still remembered Copenhagen.
Florence.
The evenings they cooked together.
The way he made her laugh when she was exhausted.
But she also remembered the hotel invoices.
The gifts.
The concealed payments.
The ease with which he had used her family’s trust.
She looked at him.
“No, Adrian.”
Her voice was steady.
“You made the decisions. I’m simply no longer protecting the story you told about them.”
Then she reached for her champagne.
She lifted the glass.
The ballroom remained silent.
Iris looked toward the assembled guests.
“I hope everyone will continue enjoying the evening.”
Her smile was gracious.
Perfectly controlled.
“After all, an extraordinary amount of effort went into bringing us together.”
She paused.
Her gaze returned briefly to Adrian.
“And I believe tonight deserves a toast.”
He stared at her.
She lifted her glass slightly higher.
“To the farewell of Mr Mercer’s career as he imagined it.”
No one moved.
Then Iris lowered the glass.
She did not drink.
For several seconds, Adrian stood motionless beside the stage.
Then his phone began vibrating.
He looked down.
The first message came from the company’s general counsel.
A formal notification confirming that his delegated authorities had been suspended pending the outcome of the independent investigation.
A second message followed from the chair of the expansion subsidiary.
He had been placed on administrative leave under the relevant employment and governance procedures.
Another notification came from an investment partner requesting an immediate meeting concerning contractual representations made during the previous quarter.
Then a banking contact asked for clarification about the company’s internal review.
Adrian stared at the screen.
