Caroline was the first to recover.

She looked at Elena.

“So that’s it?”

Elena stared.

“What?”

“He secretly pays for all of us, then leaves you the rest and suddenly we’re supposed to feel ashamed enough not to question it?”

“No.”

“You think we’re greedy.”

Elena’s face hardened again.

“I think you’re hurt.”

“Don’t patronise me.”

“I wasn’t.”

“You think because you sat beside him when he got old, you own the last chapter of his life.”

“No.”

“You do.”

“No.”

Caroline’s voice rose.

“Then say it!”

“Say what?”

“Say you didn’t want this.”

Elena froze.

Caroline stepped closer.

“Go on.”

Henry looked up.

Peter watched.

Caroline’s eyes were bright with rage.

“Say you didn’t want the house.”

Elena said nothing.

“The money.”

Nothing.

“His shares.”

“Caroline-”

“SAY IT!”

Elena shouted:

“I WON’T!”

Silence.

Caroline stared.

Elena was breathing hard.

“I will not stand here and perform purity for you.”

Caroline said nothing.

“Would I have married Julian if I hated this life?”

Elena gestured around the room.

“No.”

Her voice was still raised.

“Did I enjoy this house? Yes.”

She pointed toward the windows.

“Did I enjoy travelling with him? Yes.”

Her eyes burned.

“Did I enjoy never worrying about a mortgage again? Of course I did!”

Henry stared.

Elena stepped closer.

“But I also cleaned vomit off him after surgery.”

Caroline looked away.

“I also held his hand when he forgot where the bathroom was after anaesthesia.”

Her voice cracked.

“I also spent nights listening to him ask why his children didn’t call.”

Peter’s eyes filled.

Elena looked directly at Caroline.

“Love does not become fake because money existed in the same room.”

Caroline shouted:

“And money doesn’t become irrelevant because you loved him!”

Elena stopped.

Then nodded.

“No.”

Caroline seemed surprised.

Elena continued.

“You’re right.”

Silence.

“The money matters.”

Caroline stared.

“It matters to you.”

Elena looked at Henry.

“To him.”

Then Peter.

“To him.”

Finally back at Caroline.

“And to me.”

She took a breath.
