The physical toll was considerable.

She gradually lost weight.

Her coat deteriorated.

And as she aged, her breeding value apparently declined.

Then, one autumn morning, Duchess disappeared from the facility.

Left beside the garbage

The following evening, a sanitation worker discovered a long-haired cat near a rural dumping area.

At first, he thought the pale shape beside an abandoned mattress was an old blanket.

Then it moved.

He stopped his truck and approached carefully.

The animal was lying beneath a broken wooden pallet, surrounded by torn garbage bags, wet cardboard, plastic containers, and discarded household rubbish.

The cat’s fur was so badly matted that it hung from her body in thick, uneven clumps.

Grey dirt covered much of her once-white coat.

Her flattened Persian face was stained brown beneath both eyes.

The fur around her hindquarters was heavily soiled.

One side of her body had become damp from lying against the muddy ground.

The worker crouched.

“Hey, little one.”

Duchess lifted her head.

Her eyes were partly closed, their corners crusted with discharge.

She opened her mouth and produced a short, hoarse meow.

Then she tried to stand.

Her front paws pushed against the ground.

But the tight mats along her belly and hind legs restricted her movement.

She managed to raise her chest before slowly lowering herself again.

The worker took a step closer.

Duchess immediately flattened her ears.

She attempted to crawl backwards beneath the pallet.

But she moved only a few inches.

A faint growl escaped her throat.

It was not a confident warning.

It sounded weak and breathy.

The worker backed away and contacted a local animal rescue organisation.

A little cat beneath a mountain of rubbish

When the rescue team arrived, the sun was beginning to set.

Cold wind moved loose plastic bags across the dumping area.

Duchess remained beneath the pallet.

A half-empty disposable food container lay nearby, but it was unclear whether she had managed to eat anything from it.

A rescue volunteer named Hannah Lewis crouched several feet away and directed a small flashlight toward the cat.

Duchess blinked at the light.

Her body trembled.

Hannah could see that the fur on her shoulders had hardened into heavy mats.

Several patches were stuck together with old discharge and dirt.

The cat’s ribs were faintly visible beneath the less matted areas.

Hannah placed a small dish of food near the pallet.

For several seconds, Duchess did not move.

Then her nose twitched.

She lifted her head toward the smell.

Slowly, she crawled forward.

Her front paws dragged across the muddy cardboard.

She reached the dish and immediately began eating.

Her head stayed low.

Her ears remained flattened.

When Hannah shifted her position, Duchess stopped chewing.
