She stopped beside Evelyn’s chair.
Looked upward.
And placed both front paws on the cushion.
Evelyn remained still.
Duchess carefully climbed onto her lap.
She turned once, settled against Evelyn’s legs, and tucked her paws beneath her chest.
Then she began purring.
Evelyn gently stroked her back.
For several minutes, Duchess remained there, her eyes half-closed and her body relaxed.
The cat who once guarded every mouthful of food had just finished dinner and chosen to spend time with a person instead.
The princess by the window
Evelyn eventually adopted Duchess permanently.
She bought a small velvet-covered chair and placed it beside the living-room window.
The chair became Duchess’s favourite resting place.
Each morning, the Persian cat climbed onto its soft cushion and watched birds moving through the garden.
Her coat grew thick and luxurious again.
Regular brushing kept it clean.
Her pale eyes were comfortable, and her once-irritated skin had healed.
She still needed routine veterinary attention, particularly for her eyes and coat.
But her days were peaceful.
One sunny afternoon, Evelyn recorded a short video of Duchess resting on the velvet chair.
The cat’s platinum-white fur spilt softly over the cushion.
Her round Persian face rested against the armrest.
Sunlight warmed her back.
When Evelyn approached with a brush, Duchess lifted her head and gave a quiet, familiar meow.
She stretched.
Then she leaned into the gentle grooming strokes.
There was no dirty wire cage.
No abandoned rubbish pile.
And no reason to guard her food from anyone.
For years, Duchess had been valued only for the kittens she could produce.
Now, she was loved for something far simpler.
She was Duchess, and that was enough.
