They maintained predictable feeding times and monitored her intake.

Over the following weeks, her physical condition improved.

Her eyes became clearer.

Her skin lesions healed.

And small patches of soft white fur began returning along her back.

Yet every meal remained a tense experience.

The woman who stayed beside her

After Duchess became medically stable, she was transferred to a foster home with a woman named Evelyn Moore.

Evelyn was 62 and had cared for older cats for more than fifteen years.

She prepared a quiet bedroom with soft bedding, low furniture, a litter box, and several comfortable hiding places.

Duchess spent her first two days beneath a small table.

When Evelyn entered, the cat lowered her head and watched from the shadows.

She accepted food but remained defensive around the bowl.

Evelyn did not attempt to stroke her while she ate.

Instead, she sat several feet away, reading quietly.

Sometimes she spoke in a gentle voice.

“Take your time, sweetheart.”

Then she allowed Duchess to finish without interruption.

Each day, Evelyn repeated the routine.

She entered at the same time.

Placed the bowl in the same location.

And sat in the same chair.

Duchess gradually began anticipating the pattern.

At first, she still growled whenever Evelyn moved.

But after two weeks, she sometimes paused to look toward the chair before beginning her meal.

After three weeks, she occasionally ate while Evelyn remained nearby.

Her growling became less frequent.

One afternoon, Evelyn noticed that Duchess had finished eating without making a sound.

The cat sat beside the empty bowl, licking her lips.

Then she lifted her head toward Evelyn.

Evelyn remained seated.

“All done, pretty girl?”

Duchess blinked.

For a moment, she seemed uncertain.

Then she walked away from the bowl and settled onto her blanket.

It was the first time Evelyn had seen her leave a feeding area so calmly.

Four months later

By the fourth month, Duchess looked very different.

Her weight had improved, and her long platinum-white fur had begun growing back in soft, even layers.

Regular grooming prevented new mats from developing.

Her eyes were much healthier, although she continued receiving appropriate care for her Persian facial anatomy.

Her movements were more comfortable.

And she had developed a fondness for warm blankets and quiet afternoons.

One evening, Evelyn placed dinner beside Duchess’s favourite cushion.

The Persian cat approached slowly.

She sniffed the food.

Then she began eating.

There was no growling.

No hunched body guarding the bowl.

No frantic swallowing.

Duchess simply ate at a comfortable pace.

When she finished, she lifted her face and carefully cleaned her whiskers.

Evelyn sat nearby.

“Good girl.”

Duchess turned toward her voice.

Then, with a small movement of her fluffy tail, she walked across the rug.
